Dear Mr. Obama,

I'm going to write this post in Inglese in the, admittedly tenuous, chances That Could Some U.S. citizen come across it.

What I, and millions of other Europeans like me, want to tell you That is, if you are so keen to "anchor Turkey to the West", well you are welcome to More Than make it the 51st American state.

But please, do not pretend to take this kind of decisions for us. 

I have been pro-american all my life, and I am aware of the enormous debt of gratitude that the free nations of the West owe to the US of A. Still, this is no reason to have us pander to geo-strategic needs that are not ours, no reason to deal a potentially killing blow to our culture as Europeans by introducing what is, in effect, a foreign body into a relatively coherent culturals space.

Turkey, Mr Obama, however it might seem close when seen from a map in the Oval Office, is NOT Europe.

Turkey is a 100 years old amendment to a process that has been the very nemesis of Europe itself for centuries, which has denied the whole middle east what used to be the relatively benign rule of the Byzantines, exchanging it for the medieval night of islamic domination. 

One might be blinded by the "Europeanness" of Istanbul - but let's not forget it was Constantinople once: such a light rarely is completely smothered... But more importantly, Turkey is not only the developed, relatively civilised areas of the western part of the country - but also the "wild" areas to the east, going on to Kurdistan and then to Iraq and Iran.

That, Mr Obama, is NOT Europe. It never was, it never will be. 

And most of all, we Europeans do not want it.

Please, look for your strategic Elsewhere games - enlargement to Eastern Europe Was Tough Enough and That Was Europe. This Would Be
